Close to Flying
by Cadel Evans
|
Cadel Evans may be Australia's greatest cyclist but he is no typical sporting hero. Shy and quietly spoken, he just enjoys what he does.
Cadel was born with an incredible gift: a physiology and aerobic capacity that, from youth, set him apart. But nothing comes of talent alone. There must equally be motivation and passion.
A master of one of the most solitary of sports, mountain biking, Cadel has also risen to the pinnacle of road cycling, contesting the most sophisticated cycling team sport in the world, finishing second by less than a minute in the 2007 and 2008 editions of the Tour de France and becoming the World Champion in 2009.
Close to Flying is the story of how a passion for cycling, practised alone on the road for hours a day, became a triumphant career in not just one sport but two. It is the story of the ambition for perfection, the pleasure of doing what you love and the pain of a sport with great ascents and challenging lows. It reveals how professional cycling is never far from controversy and explores the constant pressure endured by those who compete for the top prize.
